Abstract: As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integral to healthcare, it is important to engage patients and communities to gather their perspectives on the use of this technology. Working with community partners, we conducted a series of virtual public deliberations in 2024 to explore community perspectives about the use AI in healthcare.
We recruited participants across Michigan with a particular focus on under-served communities, including rural, Middle Eastern/North African (MENA), and African American community members (5 deliberations, total n=159). For each virtual deliberation, participants were provided with educational materials and expert presentations about AI, its applications in healthcare, and the ethics and policies related to its use.
The deliberations included facilitated small groups in which participants shared their expectations, hopes and concerns about the use of AI in healthcare. In these discussions, participants emphasized the importance of safety and effectiveness, privacy and security, and the need for AI tools to work for all patients.
After our final deliberation, as part of our ongoing community engagement, we invited participants, community partners, and experts in AI implementation and policy to a virtual townhall to share the deliberation results and to provide community members and experts the opportunity to hear from each other and offer feedback about the findings.
In this presentation, we will share the results from the deliberations and townhall feedback, highlighting how community engagement can inform educational and policy recommendations to promote a more transparent and equitable use of AI in healthcare.
