Amy Penkin (she/her) is an LCSW who has overseen the clinical and operational activities of the OHSU Transgender Health Program in Portland, Oregon from its inception in 2015. She has led its growth as a comprehensive high volume program.
Since 1999, she has been working within LGBQTQIA+ settings in Portland and SF Bay Area. Her background includes LGBTQIA+ direct care as well as program development, management, evaluation, and research. She is passionate about approaching healthcare from an intersectional, equity, trauma informed, and social justice lens. She prides herself in a leadership style that demonstrates humility, kindness, transparency, collaboration, and authenticity.
Amy has co-organized statewide capacity building training in LGBQ+ and TGD health and is an administrative co-leader for the Oregon Transgender Health Coalition which has focused on statewide advocacy and legislative efforts to expand insurance coverage and protection gender affirming care in Oregon.
Within her role at OHSU Amy has launched a volunteer program and community advisory board which integrates TGD community members to inform workforce education, policy, program design/delivery, and peer support opportunities.
Through the support of a PCORI Engagement Award, she was Project Co-Lead for TRANS-ARC. The core efforts of this research collaborative led to the funding of the multi-site STRIVE study. Her research aligns with her values to center community research priorities that promote transgender justice in study design and conduct, centering peer support as a vital research priority.
Amy is a SOC8 GEI certified member of the WPATH, serves as an education committee member with its US Chapter, and is faculty with its Global Education Initiative. Amy is also a supervisor for MSW and MPH graduate students.
Amy earned MSW from UC Berkeley and has been adjunct faculty for Schools of Social work at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, Smith College and Portland State University.
