Dr. Stephanie Kukora shares her time between the Bioethics Center and the Division of Neonatology at Children's Mercy Hospital. Prior to her move to Kansas City, she did her residency and fellowship, and remained on as faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While in her neonatology fellowship, she completed Children’s Mercy’s Certificate Program in Pediatric Bioethics in 2014. Her research interests include shared decision-making in antenatal consultation and NICU care, particularly parents’ values regarding the decision-making process for infants with poor prognoses and how serious news is communicated. She also does work on the education of medical trainees with advanced communication skills using improv theater exercises. She is a member of the Pediatric Ethics Committee and provides clinical ethics consultation and ethics education to interprofessional clinicians throughout the hospital. In 2017, she founded the global health partnership in neonatology between the University of Michigan Brandon NICU and the NICU at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and has made numerous trips to support collaboration in research, clinical care, and education.
