Dr. Clare Whitney PhD, MBE, RN (she/her, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, Stony Brook University) is a nurse scientist and empirical bioethicist. Her current scholarship focuses on relational and ethical aspects of science communication and healthcare delivery, as well as methodological innovations in qualitative research practice. Questions of why and how clinicians apply their own moral values to the care they provide, the ways they communicate, and the manner in which they navigate our current culture and environment of health care delivery are especially salient to her scholarship. Dr. Whitney's foundational dissertation research explored the circumstances under which clinicians moralize substance use during pregnancy and lactation using several novel frameworks for conceptualizing clinical-moral phenomena. Specific examples of her work also include exploring the ethical and moral considerations in cancer caregiving and the use of artificial intelligence and robotic assistive devices in clinical care delivery. Most recently, Dr. Whitney has investigated the interpersonal dimensions that impact nurse and clinician burnout and professional well-being. Using qualitative and mixed methods, she explores and understands healthcare as a setting in which relational interactions produce a variety of outcomes including, most centrally, meaningful patient experiences.
