Akilah Burford, MSW, serves as a Palliative Care & Ethics Specialist at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, where she supports the pediatric palliative care and clinical ethics teams. She began her academic journey as a double major in Sociology & Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz, later obtaining her Master’s in Social Work from UC Berkeley in 2019, focusing on Children & Families Services and earning a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC – School Social Worker Certification). Her passion for working with children with serious illnesses and their families emerged during her dual internship in palliative care and oncology at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Oakland from 2018 to 2019. Akilah then dedicated four years as a Pediatric Oncology Social Work Clinician at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford, where she also contributed as a member of the hospital’s Ethics Committee. In May 2023, she obtained a Certificate in Pediatric Bioethics from Children's Mercy Center for Bioethics. In her current role, Akilah provides clinical ethics and palliative care consultation, supports systematic interventions for moral distress, and aids in the revision and creation of hospital policies.
