Ishaan Rischie (he/him) is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he is a Hook Scholar in Humanities and Ethics, affiliated with the Center for Health Humanities and Ethics. During a year-long leave of absence from the school, he is working as a research fellow at the University of Michigan School of Medicine; his research is housed under Michigan Bioethics within the Center for History, Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Ethics in Medicine as well as under the Section of Plastic Surgery within the Department of Surgery. He is also currently serving as the medical student member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, which is the custodian responsible for maintaining and updating the AMA Code of Ethics. Prior to medical school, he graduated from Rice University where he studied medical humanities and worked as a Health, Humanism, and Society Scholar with faculty at Texas Children’s Hospital and the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine. His research interests span diverse ethical discussions across topics like surgical education and professionalism, gender-affirming care, end-of-life care, informed consent and decision-making, healthcare corporatization, and health information technology.
